Hi, my name is Jaidan and I’m hiking snowdon to fundraise for a defibrillator to be put in my local area. Me and my father run Taijutsu Kai Kidderminster a jujutsu club in Kidderminster near the Greenhill estate and this year with the help of our students we want to give something back to the community. By hiking mount Snowdon we aim to raise enough money to buy and fit a defibrillator kit to the costcutter on Hurcott Road that can be accessed by anyone in the area.

After doing some research I realised that although there are some defibrillators in our community there are just not enough. This goes for most estates in Kidderminster.

There are over 30,000 cardiac arrests annually in the UK. Without the use of a defibrillator within the first 3-5 minutes the chances of survival are less than 10%, however with the use of one that goes up to a 50-70% chance.

Now think honestly, where is the closest defibrillator to your home and would you be able to get there in under 5 minutes? For the majority of people, the answer is no. Around 72% of cardiac arrests happen at home and less than 1 in 10 people currently survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. With every minute that goes by without the use of a defibrillator the patient’s chance of survival decreases by nearly 10%.

We believe this is a very achievable target and it’s something for everyone not just one charity. We hope to have the support of all who read this and especially those in our local area. I also hope we can inspire other sports groups or any community club to try and do something similar to make our town safe for its people.
