A hitch-hiking rescue dog from Armenia

We found Haribo on the side of the road in Armenia, dumped with another sibling that had already died. He was skinny but so sweet, he ran over when we were eating Gummy bears, he got his name after Sarah told me we couldn't name him or we would get attached. I said he's called Haribo and she agreed instantly and enthusiastically. We tried to take him to a nearby town where he would have more of a chance but large dogs chased him and children kicked him, so we couldn't leave him.

We took him, fed him, washed him and planned to find him a home. But in Armenia stray dogs are everywhere and it soon proved impossible to find him a home within Armenia. We began to feel very hopeless and we ever tried to leave him once, in a more friendly tourist town, but he followed me back to my hostel and slept outside, in the rain, waiting for me. I knew then that we had to find another way, but I couldn't do it without Sarah.

A friend on the Internet told us of a similar situation she had across the border in Georgia, she told us that if we could get him there, she had the contacts to get him into foster care while we waited for his vaccine papers to get him into Europe. So we took him, he hitched rides with us all across Armenia, trucks, vans, cars and anything else that would take us, people were amused by our curious trio but we carried him across the border and got him into foster care in Georgia with a wonderful woman called Inna.

That's where he stayed for the next three and a half months until his vaccine papers cleared and he could fly into Europe. Haribo now has an incredible life in the Slovakian mountains in a small hostel where he receives endless love and attention, me and Sarah look at him with so much love and wonder, a testament to what you can do with the right people and a hell of a lot of determination.

We are trying to make back some of what we spent, but me and Sarah both agree we would do it all again and if we make nothing back we still know we made the right decision. Saving a puppy found by chance, who has a whole new life because he came over to the right girls, while they were eating their favourite snack.

Thanks for reading. Haribo we love you, you were always worth.
