Raising Karsyn: A Financial Thriller

My name is Tia, and I’m raising funds for my 17-year-old nephew, Karsyn Deckard, who has been through an unimaginable medical nightmare.
In September, Karsyn suffered a ruptured appendix with a perforated bowel. After surgery, doctors were hopeful he would recover quickly and return to normal life. At first, it seemed like he was improving, but that hope didn’t last long.
Soon after, Karsyn began feeling increasingly ill. He experienced ongoing pain, especially in his chest and lungs. His mom took him to the emergency department, where they diagnosed a small pleural effusion, prescribed antibiotics, and sent him home. Despite antibiotics, around-the-clock Tylenol and ibuprofen, and multiple follow-up visits, Karsyn continued to worsen.
Eventually, an urgent care provider recognized how serious his condition was and immediately sent him to Saint Francis Children’s Hospital.
On January 14, 2026, a CT scan revealed devastating news: Karsyn’s lung and liver were covered in abscesses, and emergency surgery was required. What was expected to be a 3–4 hour procedure turned into more than 8 hours in surgery.
During that surgery, Karsyn underwent drainage of a retro-hepatic abscess with JP drain placement, a right thoracotomy, drainage of sub-diaphragmatic, pulmonary, and empyema abscesses, repair of a diaphragmatic fistula, removal of segments of his right lower lung lobe, and placement of chest tubes and multiple intercostal nerve blocks.
Karsyn has now been hospitalized at Saint Francis Children’s Hospital for over two weeks. On January 26, 2026, he required another procedure after doctors discovered yet another abscess, resulting in an additional chest tube.
This has been an incredibly long, painful, and frightening journey for Karsyn and his family. The medical bills, time away from work, travel expenses, and ongoing care are overwhelming, especially with an uncertain road to recovery ahead.
We are asking for support to help ease the financial burden so Karsyn’s family can focus on what matters most: his healing and recovery. Breanna has been unable to work since Karsyn was admitted. Any donation, prayers, share, or kind word means more than we can express.
Thank you for supporting Karsyn.
