Raising Hope for Joanna

Donation protected
Joanna is a mother, a wife, a best friend, a teacher, a gardener, a camping enthusiast, a karaoke superstar, a comedian among her people, a treasured
member of our community, and an anomaly of relentless positivity. The world is a better place because Joanna May is in it. In April of 2023, Joanna was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of brain cancer, grade 4 glioblastoma. It is, no doubt, a tragic, life-altering diagnosis. The news tore through the hearts of her family and friends. The life expectancy, according to statistics, is 12-15 months. Since her diagnosis 14 months ago, however, we have all come to learn that Joanna is not conforming to any statistics. Joanna is truly a special person, and anyone who has the privilege of knowing her feels lucky to have her in their lives. Joanna has always been an exceptionally good-natured and light-hearted human being. Even in the face of this life-altering diagnosis, she radiates hope. Her family and friends are committed to keeping that hope alive, and you know what? It's working! Over a year past her diagnosis, Joanna continues to thrive. She has spent the last year enjoying quality time with her husband, Matthew, and their two children, Mika and Sasha. She is camping, walking daily with her faithful companion, Harley, attending social events, and singing karaoke. She still holds the belt as the undefeated living room floor wrestling champion.

It hasn't all been peachy. She has undergone one brain surgery, six weeks of radiation, chemotherapy, and many medications. Joanna and her family undoubtedly are struggling through dark times. She and Matthew have endured many sleepless nights; holding a light down this path is not easy. Recently, our hopes are pointed towards a clinical trial for glioblastoma at Sherbrooke University Hospital that will deliver chemotherapy directly to the tumor. With the advocacy of her friends and family and the support of her neurosurgeon at the BC Cancer Agency, Joanna will have an opportunity to explore this treatment, which is only offered in Quebec. The cost of the medical treatment will be covered by provincial health care, but we are reaching out to our community and beyond to request financial assistance to cover the costs of travel for Joanna and a companion. She will travel to Quebec every six weeks for a few nights. The funds would be used to cover these costs and ultimately give Joanna and her family more precious and valuable time together. We appreciate your generosity and continued love and support in holding Joanna in your hearts and prayers. As Joanna says: “We believe in science and miracles.” ❤️
