Badger lover of 70, who is currently recovering from cancer was left alone in the woods with no means to contact help after having his tyres slashed by badger cullers.
Retired care worker David, from Ripley, had all four tyres punctured on his car whilst out walking on the night of the 27th trying to protect badgers from shooters; who are presently protected under law.
He was a mile from the nearest house but managed to walk there and knocked to ask for assistance. Who opens the door at night to a stranger? One brave woman did, and let David use her phone to call for help.
Badgers are being killed in huge numbers in Derbyshire in DEFRAs futile attempt to tackle bovine tb, despite there being evidence showing the disease is almost entirely spread cow to cow, very few badgers are actually carriers, and vaccinations are available as a humane alternative for both creatures.
The cull has been controversial since it's beginning. 'In 2020 the badger cull rolled out to another 11 zones, making a total of 54 cull zones. In those areas badgers are trapped in cages and shot or even more controversially encouraged in groups to piles of peanuts in the middle of a field where shooters will fire at them with high powered rifles.' (source- innocentbadger.is) The cull has a tragic affect on the rest of our wildlife when other animals get caught, injured and die in the traps.
David said of his experience;
"I was absolutely terrified standing by my car. It was dead quiet. No cars, so dark, no way I could get help. I had only been for a walk to check a sett I am very fond of, I never expected this brutality."
Sadly this behaviour is not unusual, as members of the public have had their vehicles targeted in the past whilst out in their peaceful attempt to save lives. With this in mind any left over funds will go towards helping others who have been targeted by cowardly hunters.
