Hi Everyone, I'm Nick Cane. At 66, I'm still playing and umpiring field hockey at international events around the globe. He's a picture of me at a hockey festival in Lille this March (2026) about to umpire the first match. BUT, that was all put in severe jeopardy in September 2024 when, after playing a hockey match I suffered a dramatic life-threatening heart attack. Thanks to the immediate help of a nearby total stranger, an ambulance that arrived in 7 minutes, and a helicopter with a Doctor on board in 11 mins, I was kept alive enough to get to a nearby hospital. Having technically died 3 times, I received quadruple heart by-pass surgery at the hands of the worlds' most skilled heart surgeons. I'm here today because of all of them, but the really sad thing is I never got to say 'Thank you' in person to them all.

I have had some embroidered badges made up 'Dead Man Walking' (DMW-which you can see on my yellow shirt) and sell them at a very modest profit to raise awareness and provide some funding for the British Heart Foundation, whose work helps research, train and provide support for our health-care professionals. This, together with 'GoFundMe' is my way of saying 'Thank You', and helping to continue the precious work they perform.
