Munjoy Hill North Street Fire Victims Fundraiser

Donation protected
On Saturday, January 29, 2022, at 3:07 a.m., the Portland Fire Department responded to a fire at 117-119 North Street, near the corner of Walnut Street. Red Cross Portland informed the Munjoy Hill Neighborhood Organization (MHNO) that eight (8) apartment units were affected and at least 22 people were displaced. The apartments affected by this fire will all be condemned more than likely. Many of the impacted families received small amounts of money from the American Red Cross. The immediate assistance funds cover short-term needs (hotels, housing, food, etc.), but those impacted will have a longer-term need for assistance.

As such, we created this GoFundMe page to help our neighbors and address the following two areas:

1) 100% of the funds donated here will be distributed evenly to the 22 people Red Cross Portland has identified as being displaced by this fire, with parents/legal guardians receiving the equal assistance amount for each child. The MHNO Board of Directors has approved this method of distribution.

2) Many of the families impacted will need to find permanent housing. If you know of any available housing accommodations, please contact the MHNO at info [at] munjoyhill [dot] org

Please note: This is not an MHNO fundraiser. Donations are not tax-deductible, and none of the funds will be used by the MHNO. Instead, this money will be divided between the Red Cross-identified people displaced by the fire and will go to them to be used at their discretion.

The Munjoy Hill Neighborhood Organization created this campaign. We are a four-decade-old neighborhood organization at 92 Congress Street, Portland, ME 04101. In addition to acting as general advocates for and on behalf of one of Maine's most historic communities, we provide social outreach services within the portfolio of our community work. Those programs include a senior winter shoveling response team, collaboration with the Root Cellar to provide food and essential goods for neighbors during the pandemic, and other services to at-risk or challenged residents of Portland's East End community.

Our leadership consists of a 13-member Board of Directors. We have a membership of approximately 300, a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. Each board member is a resident of Munjoy Hill.

Thank you.
