Matteo’s Second Chance

For the past five years, Matteo has been surviving on the streets. Neighbors have seen him wandering from balcony to balcony, begging to be let inside, begging for food, warmth, and love. Through freezing winters and harsh conditions, he has been alone.

This week, a member of our TSF crew was finally able to safely trap him and bring him indoors. For the first time in years, Matteo is warm and safe.

But we quickly discovered something is very wrong.

His ear is severely damaged and infected. At this time, we do not know the exact cause. It could be advanced infection, mites, frostbite damage, or possibly cancer. The tissue is ulcerated and has a strong odor, which means urgent medical attention is critical.

Matteo needs immediate veterinary care, including:

• Full bloodwork

• FIV and FeLV testing

• Possible X rays

• Sedation for a proper examination

• Ear culture and biopsy to rule out cancer

• Antibiotics such as Convenia

• Deworming and probiotics

• Pain management

Depending on what the diagnostics reveal, he may require surgery to remove the damaged tissue.

We do not know Matteo’s exact age, but we estimate he is around 7 to 9 years old. Despite everything he has endured, he is incredibly affectionate, gentle, and loving. Neighbors believe he once belonged to someone who abandoned him. Even after years of hardship, he still trusts people and craves affection.

Now that Matteo is finally safe, his journey does not end here. It begins here.
