Raising Funds For Legal Fees To Help Casey Henry

TLDR:

My wife and I are reaching out for help as we face a heartbreaking and urgent situation with my father-in-law, who suffers from Frontotemporal Dementia. His condition has progressed to the point where he can no longer safely care for himself, but due to the effects of dementia, he is unable to recognize his need for help and continues to insist on living alone. This has led to several hospitalizations, including a terrifying incident where he was struck by a car while wandering in the street late at night. Each time he returns home, the risk to his safety grows, and we fear that if he continues to live on his own, he may unintentionally or intentionally end his own life.

We are seeking legal guardianship so we can move him into a full-time care facility, where he will be protected, cared for, and no longer able to access medication or insulin unsupervised. The funds raised will go directly toward hiring an attorney to petition the court for guardianship and covering the associated legal expenses. This is the only way we can ensure his safety and well-being moving forward. Based on the last quote we received, an attorney will cost $7,500 up front and a running rate of $300 an hour. being that we do not know how long of a process this will be, our goal in this fund raiser is $10,000.

We are deeply grateful for any help and support offered during this difficult time. Your generosity means so much to our family and will help us protect our loved one and give him the care he desperately needs.

Full Story:

4 years ago, Casey Henry was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia; what that diagnosis means is that his ability to make decisions is completely effected. It differs from regular dementia in that he is still fully aware of his location, the year, the president, his medications, etc., all of which are used to determine if a person is "aware" and able to make their own choice. He is fully aware, in that regard, but cannot make safe or logical choices. On top of that diagnosis, he also has Type 1 Diabetes in which he has to keep up with his own blood sugar. Since May of 2022, he has lived in Clovis, NM with his daughter and son-in-law, Geralyn and Brandon Boydstun. In that time, he has had frequent blood sugar crashes resulting in numerous calls to EMS in order to bring him back from low blood sugar crashes. Many of those calls also resulted in Casey ending up in the local hospital, in which additional help, such as full mental health evaluations, have been requested and ignored by both doctors and nurses.

Fast forward to June of 2025; after being approved for Social Security Disability a year prior, Casey decided he could live on his own and moved into an apartment. In that time, frequent blood sugar crashes continued, resulting in either Brandon or Geralyn going over, calling EMS, and them bring him back up to a stable glucose level. Then, on September 19th, 2025, Casey was struck by a vehicle while walking down the middle of the street at night and left for dead. Casey would go on to spend several weeks in the ICU at UMC in Lubbock, Texas where doctors continued to ignore requests for full mental and psychological evaluations. Once released from UMC, he would go on to South Plains Rehab in Lubbock where once again, requests for evaluations were ignored. After a stint in a nursing home in Clovis, Medicare determined he no longer needed care and forced him out of with less than 24 hours notice to return once again to his kids' home.

Fast forward once again to the week of January 7th, 2026. On that Wednesday, Casey had a blood sugar crash during the middle of the day that was caught by his son-in-law Brandon on the security cameras at their home; he left his job, called 911, and EMS was able to get his blood sugar leveled out and stabilized. The following day, he requested to go to the doctor due to a runny nose, only to be sent to the ER with a blood sugar reading of over 500. It was determined that on top of the high blood sugar, he was having excessive heart issues and he had Pneumonia. After a stay of 5 days, Casey was released on Monday, January 12th. After returning home, still dealing with the Pneumonia, he would begin chain-smoking cigarettes outside in 30 degree temperatures.

Two days later, on Wednesday, January 14th 2026, Casey was visited by the home healthcare nurse and immediately after her leaving, gave an excessive amount of insulin and did not eat, once again resulting in a blood sugar crash, caught again by his son-in-law on camera. Rushing home once again and calling 911, EMS was able to stabilize him once again, but this time, the crash seemed intentional. His daughter Geralyn reached out to home healthcare and shared that she believes Casey to be intentionally trying to kill himself. Home healthcare called Casey's primary care physician, and after an extensive conversation with all of them, it was determined that the giving of insulin and refusing to eat was intentional in an effort to cause himself harm and end his own life. The doctor gave the direction to take Casey to the ER and request a mental health evaluation.

After returning home from serving at church that night, Geralyn and Brandon found that Casey was once again having a blood sugar crash, this time, he had given insulin and got into the shower. When he was found, the shower was cold and his blood sugar was in the low 40's. When EMS got there, Brandon explained the situation and demanded Casey be taken to PRMC, the local hospital, for a full mental and psychological evaluation.

Having been down this road before, both Brandon and Casey's son Brandon Hunter went to the hospital together to speak with doctors, nurses and any other health professionals who would be involved in the process; and finally, after years of prayer, God opened doors and provided the right doctors and mental health providers to place Casey on a mental health hold pending a full mental health evaluation.

Now, here is where things get tricky: due to the fact that requests have been ignored for years for a full psychological evaluation, Casey has never been deemed incapable of taking care of himself. Due to that, he has the right to refuse any facility. After days of searching, one facility finally accepted him, but since he refused, they cannot take him.

In order to get Casey the help he needs, it has to be determined by both a doctor and by the courts that he can no longer make decisions on his own. All of those who are around Casey on a regular basis agree that this is the case, but without a legal decision, nothing can be done. In order to have his decision making abilities taken away and given to someone who cares for him, such as his daughter and son-in-law who have cared for him over the last 4 years, an attorney has to petition the courts and the courts have to rule on the petition. In order to hire an attorney, based on the last quote we received, is $7,500 up front and a running rate of $300 an hour. Due to the 4 years of caring for Casey, the family does not have the financial means to pay for this out of pocket. We are asking for any and all help that you would be willing to give in order to get Casey the help he needs. If you have made it this far, thank you for your time and consideration and we as a family appreciate any financial support and prayers you can offer.
