Hi, my name is Flora. I am currently volunteering in Zambia, in an elementary school for children aged 3-14. The school itself is located in Livingstone and helps around 350-400 children be educated everyday.
Originally when I planed my trip here, I set aside some money to help buy supplies for the school depending on what they needed. Unfortunately, the funds I have put aside for buying equipment will only scratch the surface as what the school needs is far greater than I expected.
Examples of this is some classrooms having over 60 children in a small space, with four children sharing a one-metre bench. Many students don’t have proper exercise books and often write on loose pieces of paper they find. In some cases, four children are sharing just one pencil. Alongside this, classrooms often lack teachers due to illness. This results in one teacher having to cover 2-3 classes a day.
Going into school everyday and seeing how much help they could receive is very difficult when I don’t have the funds to make a lasting change on my own.
My goal is to raise enough money to provide every child in the school with:
• an exercise book
• a pencil
• a pen
• an eraser
Along side this, I plan on bulk buying blackboard chalk for the head teacher to distribute through the classrooms where and when they are needed. Other essentials that I would like to fund are sharpeners, cello tape, board markers, staplers (and staples) and a board ruler depending on how much money remains.
Any contribution, big or small, would make a real difference. And if you’re unable to donate, sharing the GoFundMe link would be just as beneficial.
Thank you so much for your support :)
