My name is Charlotte di Bartolo (she/they)! I'm a 22-year old student filmmaker at San Francisco State University seeking to raise funds for my upcoming short film, Brain Spiders.
Allow me to give you my elevator pitch...
Brain Spiders is a surrealist, dark comedy short film that follows Janis Bingo, an anxious loser who must take matters into her own hands after a small, yet terminal, collective of spiders makes a nest in her frontal lobe.
Think that sounds strange and unnerving? That's because it is!
What makes this film unique?
Premise aside, Brain Spiders is an oddball in every sense of the word. It's a beautiful hodgepodge, with a visual style that combines the work of Dave McKean with aesthetically Lynchian sensibilities and irreverent humor that's akin to Donnie Darko (2001) and animated comedies like Smiling Friends (2022-present).
But beneath its bizarre exterior is a little bit of my own story (and maybe a little bit of yours as well). It's an exploration of my experience with queerness, my on-going struggles with my mental health and what it feels like to be othered. It's deeply personal in a way that I sincerely believe will connect with people who've always felt a little bit out of place, regardless of whatever kind of bugs may or may not be crawling around in their brain.
What will your donation go towards?
Production costs rack up faster than you can say "production costs rack up", so any and all contributions will be instrumental in ensuring that our team has the resources to make Brain Spiders the best film that it can be.
These include:
- Production Design materials that will be used for prop-making, set dressing and creating the titular brain spiders themselves!
- Renting the proper equipment
- Location fees
- Transportation
- Feeding the hardworking crew - movie magic is nearly impossible on an empty stomach!
