My partner and I went out to see a movie for a couple of hours, and while we were away, an accidental fire caused by a faulty stove started in our kitchen.

Although we were unharmed, our beloved 2-year-old cat, Astrid, was trapped inside and sadly passed away from smoke inhalation. The loss has been absolutely devastating, and the fire damage and smoke contamination have left our flat uninhabitable.

Much of the kitchen has been destroyed, and the rest of our belongings have been heavily affected by smoke damage.

Right now, our biggest priority is finding a new home and getting to a stable place where we're able to process the grief of losing Astrid and begin moving forward.

We are currently staying with family away from our jobs and friends, and are trying to secure a new flat as quickly as possible. The upfront costs for a new tenancy, including the deposit and first month's rent, are around £2,000.

On top of that, we are facing the costs of cleaning and storing our belongings, replacing essential kitchen equipment, and covering the extra travel expenses involved in getting to and from work. Unfortunately, we did not have contents insurance, so these costs will have to be covered ourselves.

We never imagined finding ourselves in this position. It's the kind of thing you always think will never happen to you, and asking for help like this is incredibly difficult for us.
