Raising Family Spirits

Kate Smyth is part of the PD Training network as one of our corporate trainers. She has been a contractor with us for 3 years. Her husband, Alan like her is also self-employed. Their income depends on the client-facing work they deliver. As a result of a tragic accident there is no current income and unfortunately insurance has not yet made an appearance.

Please read from Kate how their life has changed and if you are in a position to help she will greatly appreciate it.

"Some of you know that my husband, Alan was living in Adelaide as he was completing a contract for BHP, commuting back to Brisbane every second weekend. On 20 July he had a catastrophic accident; he was at our Adelaide home with a few friends when he fell and hit his head on the TV cabinet. The force of the impact snapped his head back and broke his neck. He is still in Intensive Care at the Royal Adelaide hospital and we hope to move him to the spinal ward in the next few weeks but the ultimate prognosis is that the accident has left him a quadriplegic.

Alan is 55 years old and was one of the most active and fit people around – he loved to ride his bike, especially in events like the Tour Down Under, ran and swam several times a week, and loved to race motor cars. I always thought that if he got hurt it would be through one of these activities not such a simple accident at home.

As all of our family, and most of Alan’s extensive friendship circle is in Adelaide it is better for him that he remains here for rehabilitation and whatever life he is able to lead. I, of course, will stay with him to support him through this journey. My daughter, Hannah (11), has flown back to Brisbane and will live with friends to try and finish year 6. It is most likely that Hannah and I will move everything to Adelaide at the end of the year.

Everyone has been wonderfully supportive and your love, positive thoughts and practical help are truly appreciated. As Alan and I are both self-employed, we have no income and the insurance claim might take up to 6 months as the insurance assessors are likely to see if there is any improvement over time. I will start to find some work in the next few days.

Despite this tragedy, it has brought out the absolute best in people. I see kindness all around me; from the people who let me push Hannah into the queue at the airport this morning to the amazing ICU doctors and nurses.

Be kind to everyone you meet, tell your special people how much you love them, and truly, truly don’t sweat the small stuff!"
