OUR STORY

The news these past few weeks has been full of good vibes. I was pleased to hear the announcement - long overdue - that European museums intend to repatriate some of the so-called "Benin bronzes". I look forward to seeing the concrete actions that will follow these intentions!

These art pieces were looted from the Benin Palace in 1897 during British colonialism and were put up for auction. They were then acquired by museums across Europe and the United States of America. The British were thus able to recoup the cost of their military operation against the Edo, thereby gaining commercial control over palm oil... (palm oil?)

But could Benin's palm oil from the time of British colonialism have anything to do with the "palm" gas in Mozambique? Unfortunately, I believe it does.

Let me try to explain how this play on words sounds to me: in Mozambique, Palma (Palm) is the main town in the district of the same name in Cabo Delgado. The town was attacked on 24 March this year by the so-called insurgent group Al Suna WA Jamah. There is a multinational gas extraction company that is installed nearby and unfortunately some white people were executed among many others among the local population. For this reason, the news of Palma being attacked by terrorists was reported all over the world...!!!!

The international media repercussion of the conflict in Cabo Delgado is reducing my country to a single image of violence. We need to build the counter-image of this image that has become global.

Given the turbulence in which my country finds itself, the task of Restitution and Reparation seems more difficult and at the same time much more necessary.  Above all, it makes the task of understanding it a whole more difficult. Perhaps much more is needed than symbolic acts like the repatriation of our works of art. In this regard, we should bear in mind the warnings made by the great Nigerian author Wole Soyinka: restitution and truth before reconciliation!

Many of us feel that an immense work of justice is needed. We want to claim peace and reflect on who we are.

The decolonisation of minds must go hand in hand with the demilitarisation of minds, which must in turn accompany the just reconstruction of our historical memory. For the much-heralded "new relational ethic" to be real, it needs to be accompanied by important small first steps.

We want to start with three small first steps: 1) listening, 2) debating, 3) researching.

Together with specialists from other African countries, and for the first time, Mozambique will host an international debate on Restitution and Reparation.

It is both historians and civil society who are making this call: if we have things to say - let's debate. If we have things to hear - let's listen.

Let's not make this conversation about "them", but about "us".

THE EVENT:

Based on case studies, debates, films and exhibitions, the Mbenga Cultural Association together with Oficina de História (Mozambique) want to reintroduce concepts of "restitution" and "reparation" in the contemporary context of our history. Observing how these concepts emerge today in literary and artistic culture, as well as in our journalistic and academic research, a set of themes will be developed in different formats, such as webinars, exhibitions and films. Likewise, articles and interviews with national personalities will be produced with the aim of debugging the importance of these concepts for a post-conflict identity in Mozambique.

A NOSSA HISTÓRIA
