Let's Raise the Roof New Jerusalem Baptist Church

New Jerusalem Baptist Church at 313 DuBose Ave in Athens, Georgia needs our help. My name is Mary Hallam Pearse and I live on Dubose Ave, I"m a professor at UGA where I teach in the art department. I'm originally from North Carolina but have lived many places, calling Athens home for the past 15 years.
This past spring I noticed the beloved church on my street had been sitting empty. I started weeding the yard and planted a few flowers with many neighbors lending a hand. Pastor Marion and I have got to know each other as I would often see him before or after church service. After speaking with Pastor Marion we discovered the church had fallen on hard times due to the pandemic.
The funds will provide a new roof, gutters and money to pay the water bill do to a leak. Let's give Pastor Jeffery Marion, who is in his thirtieth year as Pastor and the congregation, our much needed support.
A new roof and gutters will stop the roof from leaking and provide relief from constant repairs. Paying the water bill will allow the water to be turned back on. I will pay the water bill and then get reimbursed from the Go Fund Me.
Barth Jackson of Athens Roofing, a neighbor, has generously agreed to do the new roof and gutters AT COST, in the amount of $7,100.00. The water bill is $651.00. There will also be a fee to turn the water back on. Please note the water bill was $729.10 by the time it was paid.
We are asking for $8,000.00 to cover the cost of Go Fund Me fees and to cover any additional costs for the roof if necessary. Monies will go directly into my account and I will pay the roofer via check. I'm doing this so Pastor Marion doesn't have to do any of the leg work. Because we are in a historic district we had to pay a fee, $50.00, to the Historical Planning Commission for the application for the approval of the roof.
The church has been a vital cornerstone of the neighborhood for many years. It was first a school, then Morristown Church until thirty years ago when Pastor Jeffery Marion founded the New Jerusalem Baptist Church.
