My husband, Oliver Orrian Dennis, was born and raised in Jamaica. He will travel there early December to help rebuild after the devastation of Hurricane Melissa.
This beautiful home — the one his mother and father built 46 years ago — is where Oliver and his six siblings grew up. It was a place filled with laughter, love, hard work, and countless memories.
My mother-in-law, Miss Virg, is 81 years old and loved by everyone who knows her. She’s the kind of woman who never lets anyone leave empty-handed — whether it’s a warm meal or a few dollars. Her generous heart and joyful dance moves have brightened her community for decades.
When the hurricane struck Jamaica, it tore the roof from her home and left much of the house badly damaged. All of her animals and crops were lost.
By the grace of God, Miss Virg was visiting her daughter, Darcia, in Connecticut — but her other children and relatives in Jamaica were there, facing their own losses. The family home, once filled with so much love, now stands exposed to the elements — and to looters.
Our Goal
We’re raising $5,000 CAD to help rebuild and support recovery for both our family and the wider St. Elizabeth (Holland Village) community where Miss Virg lives.
Half ($2,500) will go toward replacing Miss Virg’s roof, so she can return to a safe and comfortable home.
Half ($2,500) will go toward buying and shipping essential supplies — food, hygiene items, and basic tools — for families in the same area who are also struggling.
Oliver’s sister, Darcia Thompson, will coordinate the supplies from Connecticut, where the cost of shipping to Jamaica is much lower than from Vancouver.
The Government of Jamaica has temporarily waived import duties and taxes on approved hurricane-relief shipments, allowing donated goods to reach those in need more affordably and efficiently.
Why It Matters
This is more than rebuilding a house — it’s about helping a mother and a community regain stability, dignity, and hope.
The situation is worse than most of us can imagine and far beyond what’s being reported.
Every contribution, no matter the size, helps repair a roof, restock a kitchen, and remind a community that feels forgotten that they are surrounded by love and support — both near and far.
Transparency & Gratitude
We’ll share photos, updates, and receipts as the project moves forward so you can see the direct impact of your generosity.
Whether you’re able to donate or simply share this campaign, we are deeply grateful.
Together, we can help rebuild not just a home — but hope.

With gratitude,
Oliver Orrian Dennis & Family

How funds will be used:
50% will be used to repair Miss Virg’s home, replacing the roof and fixing hurricane-related structural damage.
50% will be sent to Oliver’s sister, Darcia Thompson, who lives in Connecticut, USA, to purchase and ship relief supplies (food, hygiene kits, and basic tools) to other families in the St. Elizabeth / Holland Village area of Jamaica.
