We are Adventure Centers Hawai‘i, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Hilo dedicated to expanding access to the physical, mental, and social benefits of indoor bouldering. Our mission is simple: to make climbing accessible to everyone—especially youth and young adults who need it most.

Our partner, Big Island Climbing, opened in 2021 as the island’s first indoor bouldering gym, providing a fun, inclusive space where climbers of all ages build confidence, resilience, and strength—on and off the wall.

Since opening, more than 8,000 people have climbed on our walls, gaining not just physical strength but a sense of belonging. Our landing mats have supported every one of those climbs, and now they’re ready for an upgrade.

We’re raising $30,000 for a custom, high-quality floor system—12 inches thick, multi-layered, and designed specifically for indoor bouldering. Thanks to a generous grant from the Atherton Family Foundation, we’ve already raised $10,000. We’re now seeking $20,000 more to complete the project and ensure every climb remains safe, comfortable, and fun for years to come.

Big Island Climbing and Adventure Centers Hawai‘i partner to make sure cost is never a barrier. Through our Climbing for Keiki program, we provide free and reduced-cost climbing for foster youth, homeschool programs, and other community groups. We also partner with Hope Services, Parents, Inc., and The Neighborhood Place of Puna to create safe, inclusive spaces for houseless and at-risk youth.
