Alma and the Alien is our wholesome short film about a young woman struggling with loneliness and unresolved grief who discovers an alien in her garden. Despite her initial fear, she invites the alien inside, and they bond while having a cup of tea. The alien's curiosity forces Alma to confront her insecurities, her strained relationship with her father, and the loss of her mother. Through their conversation, Alma opens up about her emotions and reevaluates the judgments she's internalised from others.

WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING?
Locations
Lord of the Rings couldn't have been filmed in East London, and Titanic couldn't have been filmed in the Sahara desert. The location is the backbone of many films. Therefore, renting a house for this project is our largest expense. Alma and the Alien is a film set in a house in suburban England, and this is essential to our project, as we have a crew of over ten people and need lots of space. Space will also allow us to film beautiful cinematography with plenty of character movement. Our film primarily takes place in an open kitchen with a large garden but also requires a bedroom with a window looking out to the garden. Knowing the average cost, we are budgeting £500 for our location.
Production Design
Like many films, props are a huge part of what makes our movie great. Knowing what we need, we have allocated 12.5% of our budget to purchase everything essential to make the film as great as possible.
Costume & Prosthetics
Similarly to the use of props, costumes are essential to any story. From theatre to film, how the character is presented is incredibly important to show the audience how to perceive them. Our film is about two characters: Alma and the Alien. Our alien will be created using prosthetics worn by an actor, bringing a unique look to our alien, which we are incredibly excited to develop. The prosthetics, makeup, and costumes both characters will wear are a significant part of our budget; however, our film must have the characters look extraordinary and realistic.
Catering
We will use talented actors from the Performing Arts Department for our film, allowing us to work with aspiring professionals such as ourselves. Since we can’t afford to pay them for their hard work and dedication, the least we can do is provide lunch on shoots.
Contingency
Even with the most careful planning, things can and will go wrong. A prop breaking or a last-minute change of location could be the cause. Because of this, we will allocate a 10% contingency to our budget to avoid being out of pocket when something goes wrong. This contingency will not be wasted. Any money we save from the production will be used to submit our movie to film festivals.
