Hi there,
I am going to run the Belgrade Ultramarathon (53km) on Sunday, 6th April, in an attempt to raise awareness and funds for my dear mate, Ally McFall and his family.
Many of you may not know that my friend, Ally McFall, is suffering from a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. A great friend, a dedicated husband and a much loved son, he has never sought sympathy or attention for his condition, which he has been dealing with for a little over a year now.
Ally has never been one to ask for help, but unfortunately, the cost of medical care has been significant. This includes out-of-hospital medication and continuous scans, as well as treatment for radiation and chemotherapy. We are very fortunate in the UK to have the NHS and government support, but Ally has lived in Australia for many years and is not eligible for income support. His wife, Clare, has also taken a lot of time off her own job to care for him through this difficult time.
It is unclear how long we have left, but what is clear is that even a small difference can be made to help Ally and his family, particularly by providing funds for the vital medication that he needs every day.
I decided to sign up for this event after the new year when we were devastated by further news and updates about Ally’s health.
This is outside my comfort zone and it will push me to a new level. The final distance is for Ally and I’ll be thinking of the big man every step of the way.
This is just the beginning of the journey to raise funds for this cause. The race is exactly one month from today and any donation would be incredibly appreciated by everyone connected to Ally.
My friends and I hope to continue raising awareness by promoting other events in the future.
