I have chosen this charity as they have been a life saver for myself during the last 18months while I have navigated a very hard breast cancer journey which had a lot of complications from allergic reactions to chemotherapy and then severe side effects to immunotherapy which had me in hospital and a neurological rehabilitation centre due to having a double stroke which was caused by blood clots and then having Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) which is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis which affected me with paralysis and unable to swallow and my breathing this was due to a simple infection of oral thrush which was worse as my own body was fighting it self as well as trying to fight the cancer. I had a lot of medical complications and nearly every organ was affected and there were times when I thought I would never walk again or even worse not get home to my young daughters and family members, but I defied all odds and kept fighting and after a long 215 days away from home I got home in time for the Christmas period. I am still not out the woods yet and have to attend regular medical appointments but I will carry on with my recovery but my hard journey was made a little easier by the amazing support I had from this amazing charity Karen one of the founders was there at the side of my hospital bed in the very small horrible hospital room or rehab centre or end of the phone when I didn’t want to put on my family as they had enough to do with caring for our children and deal with me being so poorly with her kind words, support and lovely gifts and a decent coffee so she kept my spirit up. Even lending me a walking aid to help with my rehab which I still have to use on a regular basis so I have decided to to challenge myself and give back to this amazing charity so please if you can help even it’s just a pound every penny helps them to continue to support myself and a lot of other people during these hard times. I have chosen to do a 5k walk on 22nd June 2025 a year on from my operation to remove the cancer I know 5k doesn’t sound a lot to most people but thinking I was still in a wheelchair and hospital bed in January this year and still have no feeling in my legs and weakness still this is going to be very tough but I will achieve it even it it takes me all day I will cross the line and raise as much as possible for this charity.
