Oyster Bay Community Rowing (aka Syosset Rowing) has grown significantly over the past year despite the many challenges brought upon by the pandemic. We have almost 50 rowers ranging from 7th to 12th grade from multiple school districts. We are proud of our team and how well it has persevered during Covid by following strict protocols and while challenging themselves to attain their rowing goals and beyond.
Upon review of our fleet over winter, the club directors, head coach, and program director have determined that we need to upgrade our fleet of larger shells to retain the competitive edge. As you may know, these boats are quite expensive! OBCR has spent significant funds to purchase smaller boats and ergs this past year to maintain our programming as US rowing teams were not permitted by our state guidelines or by USRowing to utilize large multi-seat boats in order to meet Covid restrictions on larger multi-person shells. The good news is that based on NYS directives in recent weeks, we believe the time for rowing in larger shells will be permissible in the coming months. That said, our larger fleet is old and suitable for training, but a newer 8 is needed for competition. We all want our athletes who work so hard to have equipment that can deliver better results when it is time for regattas.
Our community of families has been a huge support to the club in the past regarding equipment needs. We ask that you consider making a donation to our fundraising campaign to purchase an 8! The price tag for a new Vespoli 8-seater shell is approximately $42,000. It is an achievable goal if we all team up together and we hope to be able to reach it with the help and support of our friends and family.
