We’re asking for your support today to help make our vision, Rainbow Bridge, a reality. This project will create a safe space for Gender variant children in LaVale/Cumberland, Maryland under the care of charity Patron Kendra Brill and her partner Jade Kenney. We’ve chosen March 31st for the launch of this campaign, because it coincides with International Transgender Day of Visibility, a day where gender difference is celebrated which is at the core of our values and beliefs.
Through your generosity we’ll be able to purchase a home and create a welcoming, safe space for vulnerable LGBTQIA individuals. We’ll also be able to extend our advocacy and educational work beyond classrooms to bring it right to where it is needed at the heart of the family. Incredible as it may seem, even now, in 2018, projects like this are in desperately short supply here in the USA. With Homophobia and Transphobia on the increase, Gender variant children are exposed to discrimination, hatred, abandonment and even murder.
Just look at these statistics to say why this project is so crucial:
• Children in grades K-12 who identify as gender non-conforming report high rates of bullying and violence at school: 78 percent reported harassment, 35 percent reported physical assault, and 12 percent reported sexual violence.
• One sixth of K-12 students who identified as gender non-conforming said that bullying was so bad that they left school because of it. • 41% of respondents to a 2011 survey reported having tried suicide in an attempt to escape abuse they were experiencing. Your donation, no matter what it’s value will help us reach our goals.
We plan to use the money to:
• Purchase a house in LaVale for Gender non-conforming children to visit with their parents for respite, one to one counselling and support. • Provide an anonymous telephone helpline for Gender Non-conforming children who have run away from home to contact for rescue or to contact parents to let them know they are ok.
• Provide shelter for Gender Non-conforming children abandoned by their parents from a lack of understanding.
