Help LGBTQ Refugees in Africa

Spende geschützt
Hi, I'm David Warden and I'm raising funds to buy food for 20 LGBTQ refugees in the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. This huge refugee camp is run by the United Nations (UNHCR) but LGBTQ refugees get very meagre food rations and they face homophobia in the camp. Typically, they get enough food for one basic meal a day and this is insufficient to support good nutrition and health.

To support better nutrition, they need about £15 per person per month. This would buy rice, sugar, maize flour, wheat flour, tomato paste, tomatoes, cooking oil, onions, spices, beans, charcoal, and spaghetti. They can buy these provisions in the camp.

I'm in regular WhatsApp and Zoom contact with one of the LGBTQ refugees, Campos Gambino (known as Bobby), who keeps me informed about how they are getting on. They get very little, if any, help from anyone else.

I can't feed 20 people on my own and I hope you can help. Any amount is gratefully received. It makes a huge difference to them to know that people in the outside world care about them.

Longer term, they need to get to the UNHCR Refugee Settlement camp in Gorom, South Sudan where the agencies are more sympathetic to processing refugee status on grounds of sexuality and gender. But for now, daily survival is the main challenge.

February 2024 update: Bobby has now made it to the UNHCR Refugee Settlement camp in Gorom, South Sudan where there is a much better chance of having his application processed so that he can be resettled in the USA, Canada, Germany, Norway and Sweden. The 480km journey costs around £170. It's expensive because they are typically travelling without papers and need to pay extra at border crossings. 19 people are still stuck in Kakuma, Kenya where conditions are worsening. Can you help pay for one or more people to make this potentially life-saving journey?

About me: I am chairman of Dorset Humanists, a humanist group in the UK, and editor of Humanistically Speaking magazine. I have other contacts in the humanist community who are also trying to help LGBT refugees in Africa.

Thank you for reading this and for any help you can give.
