Join Our Global Fight Against Homophobia

Tax deductible
We're creating a worldwide network that connects, supports, and educates in a new transformative way.

Rainbopedia is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide an online platform for documenting, archiving, and exploring global LGBTQ history, current events, and personal stories. We have an online prototype — a preview of what Rainbopedia will become. It contains 14 articles that represent the type of user-generated content that will be featured in the finished platform when it launches, as well as videos from our Storytellers program. Our vision is to create an international meeting place where everyone can exchange ideas, learn from each other, and create an authentic record for future generations—something LGBTQ people have never had before. Rainbopedia will amplify marginalized voices, broaden acceptance, and help end homophobia around the world.

More than just an online encyclopedia, Rainbopedia will be a scalable, searchable archive of text, audio, photos, and video, all linked to a timeline and a world map. Rainbopedia also has a translation tool that is able to translate everything into more than 35 languages! When the platform launches, it will have the capacity for thousands of registered users to create millions of pages.

Rainbopedia will be a place a mother can turn to when her child comes out, or a place that child can go to learn they’re not alone.

Legislative mandates in the United States and other countries require that LGBTQ history be taught in schools. This course material is not readily available or easily found. Rainbopedia will be a trusted resource for educators, and will provide students with an experience of LGBTQ history that is compelling, engaging, and interactive.

"I believe that telling our stories, first to ourselves and then to one another and the world, is a revolutionary act." —Janet Mock

Why Rainbopedia? Why now?
For centuries, LGBTQ people have been vilified and their history minimized and erased. Despite gains made in the West, attacks against LGBTQ people still continue throughout the world, causing many individuals to live in fear and danger. Even in the United States, gender expression and the historic progress LGBTQ people have made are still meeting with resistance. Homophobia can no longer be tolerated. Today, we can leverage the power of the Internet to create a virtual space where individuals are empowered to share their ordinary and extraordinary selves. It’s past time for a more accurate picture of the global LGBTQ experience to be revealed.

Rainbopedia needs $75,000 in immediate funding for operating costs that will sustain the project through the final quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. These funds will pay for key staff, first phase of the platform, and awareness and engagement programs.
