We are raising money for my incredible nephew Rafi, who has been through more in the past 2 years than most people will in a lifetime.
At seven years old he contracted ecoli and Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (also called HUS).
Rafi endured tonic clinic seizures, a coma, sepsis, septic shock, pneumonia x 3, endless chest infections, kidney failure, 17 collapsed lungs, pneumothorax, miocarditis, encephalopathy, a stroke, 3 cardiac arrests coding for 23 minutes requiring ECmo life support and so much more.
Rafi’s parents, Laura and Dean said ‘we could not believe how bad it was. We coped remarkably well at the time considering, although we are mentally scarred now‘.
Laura said ‘I never for a second believed he was going to die, even when they told me he wasn’t going to make it… I stayed hopeful right up until I saw the machine flat line and watched them fail to resuscitate. At that point I truly never thought he would have survived. Raf was weak, his heart stopped every time they rolled him. Your life is worth every bit of fight we gave’.
We knew we needed to get Rafi an accessible home so an extension was started and we successfully contacted DIY SOS. The wonderful team of purple shirts and an army of volunteers came to do the build and transformed Rafi’s home making it a possible home for a family again.
This is one thing off our list but what remains a huge worry is the level of money that is needed to fund Rafi’s treatment and ongoing therapies. Rafi has learnt to stand with help from his Dad and he can walk a walker, his speech is starting to return, he can move his limbs and grasp objects but there is a long way to go. Our aim is get him walking, and moving independently, able to eat and drink safely without a feeding tube and to have a chance at an independent life one day. Your donation will help us do that.
