Our friend and coworker Rafael Rodriguez, his 13-year-old daughter and his 14-year-old son lost nearly all of their possessions when a fire consumed their apartment on the morning of January 19th.
ABC-7 News Story on the Fire
Channel 2 News Follow-up Story
A malfunctioning stove sparked the fire that engulfed their entire apartment in just under five minutes. It moved so fast that they were not able to search through the smoke to rescue their ten-year-old dog Thunder, who the kids had raised from a puppy.
They’re recovering emotionally and from first degree burns, but they’re also devastated and could use our help.
Rafa protected his family with renters insurance, but of course there’s a deductible, there’s “depreciation” on their things and there’s no firm date on when they will get an insurance settlement.
Their apartment building is letting them stay in a “show unit” for now. But while they have a place to sleep, they have little else than the “show furniture”. The “show dressers” are empty and the “show electronics” are fake. While the kids can sit at a desk, they can’t really use the cardboard computer to do their homework.
Right now they’re just starting to replace things from school clothes to toothbrushes to a computer to a second pair of shoes for each of them…pretty much everything.
They really could use some help from us right now. Please give them your support.
