It is reasonable to feel powerless as an artist in this moment of COVID-19. In the face of this pandemic goliath which wreaks havoc on our lives, communities, economies, what hope can we have to make a difference through aesthetics?

Philosopher Jonathan Lear coined the phrase “Radical Hope”, specifying that “what makes hope radical is that it is directed toward a future goodness that transcends the current ability to understand what it is.” Lear goes on to clarify, “radical hope anticipates a good for which those who have the hope as yet lack the appropriate concepts with which to understand it.” In other words, a specific vision for a better world after COVID-19 has not yet crystallized, yet artists continue to make work in quarantine.

The show includes a diverse and international range of 29 artists and 42 works. Artists included are Daniel Barragán, Mary Baum, Isabelle Brourman, Andy Bullard, Kate Butler, Greg Caldwell, Yen Yen Chou, Maddison Colvin, Pearl Corry, Aloe Corry, Hank Ehrenfried, Jonathan Frioux, Connie Fu, Jacob Haupt, Kelvin Horn, Devin B. Johnson, Xingze Li, Lizzy Lunday, Emmett Metier, Katie Neece, Amber Peck, JiWon Rhie, Madeline Rupard, George Skoufas, Janae' Sumter, James Talbot, and Areum Yanga.

The show was borne out of a desire to feel connected as a community of artists even in the time of quarantine. It intends to reveal relationships; not only between works and people, but relationships with the self, the home, the visible world, between materials and form, color and light. Through painting, video, performance, or sculpture, each piece in this show is selected for the hope it offers the viewer through the act of making.

It is free to view the show! You can join the Zoom call or view the 3D gallery online, once it goes live on May 28th, at any time. Donations are encouraged in any amount but not required, and 100% of donations on Gofundme will be made to the International Rescue Committee’s Covid-19 relief fund. Donations of $5 or more will be rewarded with a free pdf download of Radical Hope’s art and artist catalogue, designed beautifully by artists Connie Fu and Aloe Corry. For any original art purchased, artists will donate half of the price (not including shipping and taxes) to the International Rescue Committee for COVID-19 Relief!

Join us on Zoom on May 28th! The link will be posted on Instagram and Facebook and we will have a tour and an informal Q & A.
