RADA Shakespeare Training 2017

Donation protected
Every year, over 400 actors from around the world audition for 30 spots in an intensive Shakespearean training course at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. And…

I GOT IN! Huzzah! Storytellers have plenty of dreams, but none has been more profound to me than becoming a classically trained Shakespearean actor.

who are you, anyway?
Sophia Khan , actor, writer, and runaway academic currently living in the city of stars (aka Los Angeles). Here is a link to some video clips of my recent work, including Lady Macbeth and Richard III.

what's RADA?
RADA is one of the most elite acting conservatories in the world (for my American friends, essentially the Juilliard of England). Alums include Alan Rickman, Anthony Hopkins, Peter O'Toole, Kenneth Branagh, Ralph Fiennes, Tom Hiddleston, Vivian Leigh, Fiona Shaw, Juliet Stevenson...suffice it to say, RADA's reputation garners deep respect in theater and film circles, opening doors to incredible opportunities.

what's the bottom line?
I'm throwing all my savings into this program, and I'm looking for loans and grants, but there are no scholarships available for RADA's short courses. So...I need help to get there!

Here's the price breakdown of my anticipated expenses (taking into account the exchange rate and flights at the time of this posting).

Whatever you can contribute, I will be infinitely grateful. Every dollar helps!

tuition: $7,104
housing: $3,624
airfare: $814
insurance: $500
food: $2,500
TOTAL GOAL: $14,542

why shakespeare?
Performing Shakespeare gives me chills; I know that I'm channeling something great, something transcendent, something utterly beyond me as an individual. So if I could do Shakespeare for the rest of my life and nothing else, I would be ecstatic. And no matter what else I do as an artist, Shakespeare will inform it.

This rigorous classical program with the top tutors in the world will elevate and liberate my craft, building upon the foundational core I've developed in contemporary acting methods (Meisner, Stanislavski, Adler, Hagen). I will carry my training from this intensive into every audition and onto every set, weave it into every story I tell.

what do you do all day at RADA?
Classes run from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, and we work on Voice, Character, Movement, Choral Singing, Period Dancing, Stage Combat (en garde!), Sonnets, Monologues, Scenes, and finally mount a full production at the end of the course.

Make no mistake: this is a boot camp, not a leisurely summer jaunt. This program is intended for professional actors with a serious commitment to their craft and requires us to devote ourselves completely, body, mind, and soul. I'm all in.

what happens after the program?
I hope to be performing Shakespearean regularly. I hope to adapt Shakespeare for the screen. I hope to travel the world using Shakespeare to uplift and empower at-risk communities. But all of that, as they say, is up to Lady Fate.

Whatever happens, I can assure you that I will continue in my career as a storyteller, invigorated with a deep and lasting foundation in the truly elemental magic of Shakespeare.
