Two Rotary Clubs in North Carolina, the Holly Springs Rotary Club and the Apex Sunrise Rotary Club, have teamed up to launch a major initiative to help individuals suffering from the affects of Alzheimer's and dementia.
MUSIC & MEMORY℠ is a non-profit organization that brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirm through digital music technology, vastly improving quality of life.
Using this model our clubs have organized and are collecting finanical donations that will go toward the purchase of iPod Shuffles, headsets, music and computers.
We are also accepting used equipment from those who have used iPod Shuffles or laptop computers they would like to donate.
Each new iPod Shuffle costs around $40-50. Financial donations will also be used for the purchase of music.
Our club members will set up personalized music playlists, delivered on iPods, and train care professionals how to use them for those in their care. These musical favorites tap deep memories not lost to dementia and can bring participants back to life, enabling them to feel like themselves again, to converse, socialize and stay present.
Our clubs expect to make a major contribution to the memory care facilities in Wake County, NC and to those they care for.
I have personally witnessed the affects of Alzheimer's with my father and father-in-law. Both passed away from this awful disease. Many of our clubs members have also been touched by these diseases. Through this program we expect to enrich the lives of those suffering, for their loved ones, and for those who provide care.
