Send Rachel to the Humber College Puppetry Intensive!
Start-End: Now - May 10th
Goal: $2700 (Tuition, Flight, Lodging, Food, Transportation)
Hello everyone!
First off, thank you so much for looking at my page! My name is Rachel Burson and I am an aspiring puppet builder.
As you can see, by watching my video, I have been building puppets for a little over a year now. I bought a puppet building book and I have been self taught up to this point. I am currently working on my 7th puppet and I cannot get enough of it. I love every moment and every challenge that comes with building a puppet. From drawing out the design to adding the finishing touches this feels like something I could do for the rest of my life. So, after some serious consideration I have come to the realization that I want to make puppet building my career. Weird, I know.
Through my newfound journey I found the Humber College Puppetry Intensive that happens up in Toronto in the summer. It is an immersive two week program where you are taught by puppet builders and puppeteers in the business while also being surrounded by your fellow peers. It consists of four classes: Breath, Movement and Manipulation, Puppet Construction and Design, Survey of Puppetry in Contemporary Culture and Ensemble Creation. This is the next step I need. I have gotten to this point on my own and now it is time to see where I can go with the proper guidance. I need mentors, experts and peers to help me understand how to improve in a way I cannot do myself. I am genuine when I say this is what I want to do with my life and I need this opportunity.
Here’s the hitch. I recently moved to LA and I have been working in freelance film production so, needless to say, money is tight. I live paycheck to paycheck and cannot fathom adding this intensive to my plate at the moment. That is why I am asking for $2700 for this trip. Here are the costs I am looking to cover:
Tuition: $1375
Travel Flight: (LA to Toronto) $500
Lodging/Food/Transportation: Whatever is remaining
This is not a quick or easy trip and that is why I am reaching out. This is very hard for me because I have never been one to ask for help. But my dream of becoming a full fledged puppet builder is outweighing my fears for once. That’s saying a lot.
So, again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking time to watch my video and look at this page. Every penny will go towards allowing me to pursue a dream that means everything to me. How often do you get to say something like that?
