Rachel needs help! Open Heart Surgery Recovery

On Thursday night, 6/10, Rachel (29years old nursing student) thought she had the stomach flu (fever, upset stomach). These symptoms went on for a few days, even allowing Rachel to think she was on the mend come Sunday. By Monday morning, 6/13, she was in a fight for her life. She was taken to the hospital by her brother and was quickly diagnosed with sepsis and endocarditis caused by a bacterial infection. Along with sepsis, Rachel’s mitral heart valve had ruptured, and she needed open heart surgery to replace the valve. At this point, it was a delicate balance for the surgeon to determine the right time for surgery. Too soon and the infection could be too much of a risk factor, but too long and her heart may be too damaged. The surgery had to wait until Friday, 6/17, when she could be be stabilized enough to tolerate surgery. The surgery was successful and she is currently (6/19) recovering in the Cardiovascular ICU at Torrance Memorial.
While the surgery was successful, she is still at risk for severe complications. Post open heart surgery there was no circulation to her feet she needed to have a secondary surgery to clear an obstructed artery. Her heart rhythm is not as stable as it needs to be. Overnight (6/19-6/20) her heart went into a v-tach rhythm and stopped. Nurses performed chest compressions for 2 minutes, shocked her heart, and were able to get it restarted. She is currently (6/19 am) awake and alert.
Rachel is a daughter, sister, dog mom, and kind hearted friend that very much needs your help.
