Dear Friends & Family,
A few weeks ago a very good, dear friend of mine suggested that I start ( actually she offered to start it for me) a GoFundMe campaign to help support my long-time dream of becoming a mom.
Some of you already know the struggle that I have been through this past year trying to conceive and fighting my insurance company to cover the costs.
A little background: this past year I was finally given health insurance through the CUNY (city university new york) system that I have been working for the past 2 years. To my delight the coverage included up to 3 IVF (in vitro fertilization) cycles at 80% coverage! But there was a catch, you had to be under 45 to be covered. Well, I had started my fertility treatments well before my 45th birthday so I researched to see if I could still be covered.
I fought the insuranace company for 4 months. My fertility doctor wrote a letter stating that I was a very good candidate for the IVF treatment and I also wrote a testimonial pleading for them to make an allowance, especially since I had started treatment before my 45th birthday. Long story short they denied me the coverage.
I had one shot at attempting the IVF financially on my own. In early March I underwent 3 weeks of shots & scans and the doctors retrieved 2 beautiful ova and they both fertilized & made it to day 5 (and were grade A embryos)! Next they were transfered back to me , but sadly they did not create a pregancy.
I was to put it bluntly completely devastated. I really had a feeling that things were going to work and I would be a mom in 2016. Now I am completely depleted of funds to continue more fertility treatments.
I never dreamed that I would be in this position of facing the prospect of never being a mom. I had honestly thought it woudl've happend years ago with 'Mr. Right'. But life has a way of not always going as hoped or planned for many of us. I also never considered asking my friends or extended family for help in this endeavour financially (until a very good friend suggsted it).
Becoming a mom, experiencing pregnancy, and sharing my life with a child is for me, (like it is for many people) an experience that I truly long for and do not want to miss out on.
Some of you may be wondering why don't I just adopt. Believe me I have researched it and gone to adoption events, it is extrememly difficult for a single woman and very costly, can take on average 2-3 years, not to mention a good risk of the adoption not coming to fruition.
I am humbly asking for your support towards my dream of creating a family & becoming a mom. Any amount of donation would mean more to me than you know.
Thank you for taking the time to read this statement and God Bless you all.
XOX,
Rachael Hirt
