Our Story
Hungary Hearts Dog Rescue is a Registered UK Charity. Founded in 2012 by Hilda Zilahi Barabas, it started as a Facebook page known as ‘Rescue Hungarian Dogs and Puppies for Adoption.’ We became a small charity in 2014 and awarded registered charity status in 2016. Our aim is to find loving homes for abandoned and neglected animals on death-row or on the streets in Hungary. Dogs don't understand borders and neither do we!
What we do
Hungary Hearts Dog Rescue was born from a love for all dogs, irrespective of their shape, size or age, by people who want to make a difference to animal welfare. It was created to address a signifiant problem regarding the care and treatment of stray or abandoned dogs in Hungary.
Our volunteers are compassionate, companion animal welfare advocates who contribute their free time, skills, finances, and rescue experience. In turn, their dedication helps save the lives of abandoned, abused, homeless, neglected, orphaned, rejected, strays and surrendered dogs in Hungary.
We select our dogs from killing stations and the streets in Hungary, where healthy, adoptable dogs die or are destroyed every day. They are taken to our small family run shelter in Debrecen where they are cared for, vaccinated, sterilised, fully wormed and flea treated then micro-chipped for an EU passport. Older dogs are blood tested for heart worm and canine babesiosis.
No dogs are brought to the UK without a pre-arranged foster or adoptive family. All of our dogs enter family homes, none of them take up precious shelter space and we always take back our dogs if there is an unexpected issue and rehome them. We commit to our rescue dogs for life.
Since 2012, we are proud to say that 578 dogs have been saved, homed and rehoused in loving forever homes.
We will help you discover the appalling conditions these dogs live in. In Hungary, there are no dog wardens, few shelters and no major rescue charities like in the UK. The few makeshift shelters that are run by animal lovers are in their gardens, or in abandoned buildings, they are full of sorrow and agony with no veterinary treatments available, food is only provided when we can get donations to them. The killing stations are just horrific, they are prisons for dogs, kept out of the public’s eye and dogs have to fight for food, to survive and have very little hope. No dogs should ever suffer like that.
We will continue to rescue as many dogs as we can with the help and support of British dog lovers and those further afield. Please support us in our quest to build a small UK shelter so that we can save more and help those that require a bit more help.

Why is important to support us?
We rescue stray & abandoned dogs from the streets & killing stations of Hungary and care for them until foster or forever homes can be found in the UK. We support vulnerable dogs, left to fend for themselves on the streets or left to die in diabolical killing stations. We are determined to raise awareness of the terrible conditions innocent and healthy dogs encounter in Hungary and aim to contribute to better animal welfare and protection.
