Greetings all,
As many of you may or may not know, I will be running the “Rock the River: Palisades Half Marathon” this May.
Though a land speed record may be shattered in the process, I would like to be clear in saying my intention here is not to dethrone Usain Bolt as the fastest man alive.
I am running this race in an effort to raise money for the Milwaukee Collegiate Academy, a public charter high school in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their mission is to deliver a college-focused education that will prepare their students to go to and through college!
Too frequently, however, they find themselves insufficiently funded. Basic necessities such as books, desks, computers, after school programs, and the like are often considered a luxury that they simply cannot afford.
Often teachers in this school have to spend their own money to provide the aforementioned school supplies.
I am very impressed by the intentions of this school and its staff, however I am equally discouraged by their current financial circumstance.
With that in mind, the time is now for tough action.
By now you may be wondering “Why would I donate to a school in Milwaukee when there are schools in similar situations here in the Tri-State area?”
Please consider the following:
Milwaukee’s violent crime rate is higher than 96% of the country, per the FBI’s uniform crime report.
Milwaukee’s Public School graduation rate is consistently below the state average in recent years.
13% of African American males in Milwaukee will serve jail time, the highest incarceration rate in the nation.
One could argue that the antidote to these social trends is education. I personally believe that formal education, over several generations, has the power to rectify these social trends.
In short, these students need your help. If you feel so inclined please consider donating to this cause. Any and all donations are welcome and please keep in mind that you can make a difference in this world.
Best regards,
Elfers
P.S. The highest donation will be matched by yours truly.
