We are Wayne & Yvette from the Dundee RAAC Campaign Group.
After spending over a year meeting & supporting Dundee & Monifieth residents
whose lives have been turned upside down by RAAC. We have stood under the roofs
that residents no longer trust and listened to the fear, exhaustion, mental health & well being & the financial ruin residents face. We have held meetings and heard stories that
would break anyone’s heart.
We have spoken with people who haven’t slept properly in months. Residents who worry seeing the cracks & damage in the panels, especially when new cracks appear. Residents who
worry every time it rains. The fear of collapse now or in the future. Older residents who feel trapped and forgotten. Families
who lost tens of thousands of pounds overnight through no fault of their own. The financial burden.
We have met Council tenants who still live under RAAC panels every single day. Some are suffering from illnesses directly caused by damp and
mould in their properties along with dealing with RAAC.
According to the government and the local council knew about RAAC for at least two years. Reports & documents show & suggest that RAAC panels were assessed & repeatedly reported from as early as 1990, but unfortunately no action to deal with RAAC panels was taken & none of the public were informed about RAAC. The 1st homes with RAAC were demolished in 1994 due RAAC. Again more homes were demolished due to RAAC in 2004. Alerts & concerns raised with government bodies repeatedly about pre 1980's RAAC panels. Why was RAAC not addressed sooner??
The
Scottish Government recently found a way to make flexibility available through the
Affordable Housing Supply Programme for RAAC impacted Aberdeen residents. Allowing financial aid for homeowners & allowing funds to be available for the local authorities to invest in council properties for tenants.
That was certainly the right thing to do. However, Dundee, Scotland’s worst hit
city - 950 homes, has been left waiting.
We have committees, pilots and assessments. But NO
clarity! NO certainty! NO fairness!
The residents of Dundee and Angus are not asking for any special treatment. Residents
are asking to be treated with the same urgency and compassion that Aberdeen
received.
We are asking & urging the Scottish Government to give Dundee and Angus the
same opportunity Aberdeen has been given - the chance for people to move on
with their lives, to feel safe, and to plan for their future without fear. To take away the financial ruin residents face.
Families in Whitfield, Meniezhill, Lochee, Craigiebank or Craigiebank Circle & Milton Street, Monifieth
should not be told that their concerns matter less.
Thank you for taking the time to read & the residents would appreciate your support.
Kind regards
Yvette & Wayne Hoskins, along with the residents in Dundee & Monifieth affected by RAAC
