This past spring, Andrew McDowell graduated from the University of North Carolina Wilmington with a degree in English. Following a difficult summer due to an unspeakable family tragedy, Andrew was diagnosed with stage-four lung, spinal, and kidney cancer in November. For the past month, he has undergone daily radiation treatments at Duke University Hospital in Durham. He will begin an aggressive course of immunotherapy after the holidays. Andrew, an excellent server at Quanto Basta, an Italian restaurant in downtown Wilmington, is unable to work due to his diagnosis and treatment. His daily radiation sessions at Duke, and his upcoming immunotherapy, required him to rent a second apartment in Raleigh, two hours away. This fundraiser is meant to raise money to help make up for lost income as well as defray significant medical bills—especially as substantial cuts to the Affordable Care Act have drastically impacted Andrew’s health care coverage. Andrew is a sweet, generous, and thoughtful son, brother, father, and friend, and it is the sincere hope of this fundraiser that we can all help and support him during this very difficult holiday season and beyond.
