On April 1, 2015 my husband CJ and I received some heartbreaking news. At our routine 20 week ultrasound appointment, the technician spent a lot of time looking at our baby’s heart. He saw a problem and referred us to a specialist who found a heart defect. The specialist then referred me to Children’s Hospital to get a second opinion. They confirmed that baby Alice does have a heart defect called Coarctation of the Aorta or COA. It is a congenital heart defect that will require heart surgery after she is born. There is nothing more disheartening than hearing the words, “your baby has a heart defect and will require surgery.”
We are saddened and scared for the future, but hopeful that Alice will be in the right hands with the surgeons at Children’s Hospital. We are seeking lots of prayers at this time.
The reason we chose to start this Go Fund Me page is because after only one day of appointments, our medical bills are already beginning to pile up into the thousands. I have to have several more costly visits before Alice is born to monitor her heart. After she is born, I can’t even imagine the cost of her care and surgery. I did call our insurance provider and learned that we have a yearly max out-of-pocket charge of $12,700. Obviously any bit of generosity will help us tremendously. The more help we receive with her medical bills, the more secure we will be to take some time off with her and be there for her during her surgery and recovery. We try to live on a teacher’s and bar tender’s salary, and our regular bills are already tight without adding several thousand in medical bills on top of it all.
