Helping Jamaica Rebuild After the Hurricane

Donation protected
In the aftermath of the recent hurricane in Jamaica, I feel a deep responsibility to act.

As a family, we have already filled and sent barrels of essential items to Jamaica, but it has become clear that much more help is urgently needed. We had originally planned to spend Christmas in Jamaica as a family before the hurricane hit. Now, I will be the only one travelling. I cannot, in good conscience, go to Jamaica for a vacation. I am going to assist in any way I can, to help rebuild and to give back to the country that has given me so much throughout my life.

My focus is on a project very close to our hearts, The Trelawny Infirmary.

As a family, we have supported this organisation for many years through donations of money, food, provisions, clothing, bedding, and other essentials. The Infirmary provides care and shelter for some of the most vulnerable people in the community. Sadly, the building has been destroyed by the hurricane. The residents have been relocated to a nearby location, but the conditions there are inadequate on many levels. I have included photos and a video on this page to show the current reality.

I am raising funds to help rebuild the structure, purchase basic food supplies, provide beds (camp beds), bedding, and clothing, supply toiletries, adult hygiene care, medical supplies, and cover other urgent needs as they arise.

My goal is to raise £5,000, but any amount raised beyond this will allow us to extend support further and increase the impact.

All funds raised through this campaign will be used directly for hurricane relief efforts, with a primary focus on supporting The Infirmary. This includes purchasing supplies locally where possible and funding materials and support needed for rebuilding and re-accommodation.

Due to ongoing shortages on the island, there may be occasions where essential supplies are not readily available in Jamaica. In these cases, funds may also be used to source and transport critical items from abroad, including the United States, to ensure urgent needs are met without delay.

I will be travelling to Jamaica personally and will be fully managing and overseeing the use of all funds raised through this campaign. I will be directly responsible for coordinating purchases, distributions, and support on the ground. Where possible, I will share updates, photos, and videos of progress, document purchases and distributions, and show how donations are making a real difference. Every contribution will be handled with care, responsibility, and respect for those receiving support.

I am sharing my family background to explain why I feel so deeply compelled to help.

My family’s roots are in Crooked River, Clarendon, Jamaica. My Auntie, Mary Duharty (Pryce), First Lady Justice of the Peace in Trelawny, Falmouth, returned to Jamaica over 30 years ago after spending much of her early life in Bristol. She dedicated her life to community building in Retreat Heights, Trelawny, raising thousands of dollars to help establish a local community centre and supporting youth education programmes alongside other veterans from Bristol and cities across the UK. She was a trailblazer, always willing to help others build their dreams and homes in the Jamaica they loved.

Her sister, Pearleta Williams (Pryce), soon followed in her footsteps. Together, they became pillars of the Retreat community, active members of their church and constant supporters of those in need. Their commitment to service, community, and giving back is something I grew up witnessing, and it has shaped who I am today.

Because of them, helping Jamaica is not something I feel is optional, it feels like a responsibility.

This hurricane has shaken many Jamaicans and people of Jamaican heritage worldwide. The devastation is unlike anything seen in Jamaica’s history. Entire buildings have been destroyed, farmland and produce torn from the ground, and countless people left without food, water, electricity, or shelter for weeks. The impact has been harrowing, heartbreaking, and deeply traumatic.

If you are able to support this cause in any way, whether through a donation or by sharing this page, it would mean more than words can express. Together, we can help rebuild, restore dignity, and provide hope where it is needed most.

Thank you for your kindness and support.
