Imagine losing a baby due to a congenital heart condition. Carrying him to term, holding him, loving him, and burying him not long after his birth.
Then a second chance, a light in the darkness, you find out you are pregnant again. Sadly, the joy and anticipation would be short lived. This baby also had a congenital heart condition and once again the future was unsure. Right then and there, Nicura Thompson vowed she would not lose another baby. Come hell or high water she would find a way and her son would live.
She actually holds herself responsible for the loss of baby Colton. She said she should have fought harder for him to be transferred to another hospital capable of performing the surgery he needed. She said, by the time they were ready to transfer him he became unstable and passed away shortly thereafter. The what if’s, still haunt her.
So when Emmett was born she vowed to do anything and everything within her power to make sure he would get the chance to live. She has done just that. He is on his way to Mott’s Children’s Hospital to receive his 2nd open heart surgery and an airway stent that only their children’s hospital offers. She had another heart mom deliver her son’s records directly to Mott’s. Only after the hospital where they are located, failed to get the records to the accepting CT and ENT surgeon after 3 weeks while her son remained an inpatient in limbo. So she took matters into her own hands and succeeded.
Due to CoVID the Ronald MacDonald house isn’t open. They normally would provide food and a bed to sleep in when Nicura arrives at Motts. She was so focused on getting there she took no thought for herself. She is still pumping. It costs $80/night for a hotel. Due to her anxiety, it is very difficult to leave Emmett alone. She also needs money for food. Insurance has approved the transfer, but the day to day expenses while she is at the hospital will add up quickly.
These parent’s have given everything trying to save Emmett and care for their 3 other children. She will likely be in Michigan 3-4 weeks. If you live near Mott’s and can bring her a meal, please do. If you can contribute to her lodging expenses so she can afford a place to sleep, and take a shower, great. This mom needs all the help she can get. If their is another heart family near Mott’s who could provide her a place to stay, feel free to reach out to her on Facebook. (Nicura Thompson)
The ICU chairs next to the patient’s beds are not meant for sleeping and are extremely uncomfortable. If you can’t offer anything financially, then please pray for Emmett and his family. This mother has slept in her car more than once In freezing cold temperatures to be close to our local children’s hospital.
Nicura will find a way regardless if this Go Fund Me Account reaches it’s goal. It’s my goal to lighten her burden and allow her to only worry about being present with her son during this emotionally difficult time. There are no guarantees. That being said, this mother has kept her promise and has found a path forward despite all the odds being against her.
In the next few days she will place her son in the arm’s of 2 surgeons capable of giving Emmett his best chance at life. Please join me and let’s help make this mother’s load a little lighter.
