I began transitioning in June of 2017. At that same point, I began attempting to have a double-mastectomy. My chest is the greatest cause of pain in my life and I want nothing more than it to be gone. It's taken me 2 years to get a consult and then an additional year nearly to finally get to the insurance portion. After all of my preparing which included paying for the most expensive (and inclusive) health insurance plan my employer offered, I was confident that my procedure would be covered when my time came. I had researched for months and spent countless hours on the phone deciding which plan would be best. The plan I selected was supposed to cover gender-confirming surgeries, including double-mastectomy and chest sculpting.
Unfortunately, while it does cover those things, it does not cover all of the additional things necessary for the procedure to happen. The things not included? Liposcution of any kind, nipple grafts (optional, but for me, I don't consider them optional), a portion of the surgical fee (assuming the portion that is considered extra for the time to complete the line items they will not cover), and the facility fee at Weiss Memorial.
I went through two rigorous appeals with United Healthcare which included additional letters of support as to why these things should be covered under my plan as the surgery cannot go without them.
My worst fear confirmed. A third denial.
Applying for credit cards has done no good as I don't have a high enough credit score at this point in my debt consolidation program to start new lines.
I am a hard-working man, however, I don't live a life of luxury. All of my extra money (what little there is) is spent on my two children and ensuring they have all of their needs met and supporting our animals. Unfortunately, having made bad decisions as a college student is now something I am paying for meaning my car payments and other loans that I am paying back have sky-high interest attached.
I plan to pay anyone who helps me back in a timely manner via Venmo or cash app.
In order for me to secure a surgery date within the timeframe that my estimated out of pocket is secure is winding down and any help at all is appreciated.
I've been staring at this screen for days on end. I never wanted to be the person who asked anyone for help, but I don't feel like I have another way at this time.
Thank you,
Cole
