In 2018, the Lafayette College Men`s Soccer team paired up with Team IMPACT and we were introduced to our new teammate, Andrew Hummell. Team IMPACT matches children facing serious illness and disability with college sports teams, creating a long-term, life-changing experience for both the team and the families. From the first day Andrew stepped foot on campus he instantly connected with the team and continued to bring energy and joy each and every day to the program. Andrew is and always will be an integral part of the Lafayette community.
After Andrew was diagnosed with Down Syndrome at birth, Andrew faced another challenge in December of 2017 when he was diagnosed with Leukemia. Treatment started immediately and he went through intense chemotherapy for months. Being the warrior that Andrew is, he fought every day and the cancer went into remission. Andrew’s fight against cancer has been an inspiration for the team and his resiliency and strength continues to have a positive effect on everyone he encounters.
Fast forward to 2023 and unfortunately the cancer has returned. Andrew is currently being treated at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children`s Hospital and is currently going through another round of chemotherapy treatment. Andrew was not responding well to this chemotherapy and will now be receiving CAR T-Cell Therapy, a more aggressive treatment. This treatment will be done at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, which will require the Hummel`s to travel back and forth between hospitals.
Andrew is an essential part of the team and we want nothing more than to see Andrew on the sideline cheering for the Leopards come next fall.
All of your financial support will go towards medical expenses, treatments, travel and lodging for Andrew and his family.
Andrew, his family and the Lafayette Men`s Soccer team greatly appreciate the love and support and thank you for your kindness and generosity.
