New Journey...Brain Cancer

Donation protected
“Brain cancer” and “Advanced metastatic Stage IV triple negative breast cancer” are the two new diagnosis we have received during the last week. The 5 years survival rate for people with this diagnosis is 17%. When cancer metastasizes, like Lisa’s, it is considered stage IV meaning it is incurable. This week has been a whirlwind of new terrifying terms and statistics. Lisa’s first words after speaking with her oncologist were, “but have you met my Jesus?” We know He is ultimately in control of this situation.

On Tuesday, October 10th, 2023 Lisa completed 18 months of treatment for breast cancer. She persevered through 7 months of chemotherapy infusions, a couple of hospital stays, and a double mastectomy. During surgery, cancer cells were found to still be in the lymph nodes. Her treatment plan was then expanded to include 25 radiation treatments, followed by 6 months of oral chemo.

Lisa's cancer type, Triple Negative Breast Cancer, is known to be aggressive and move into other parts of the body. In July, Lisa began experiencing periods of being lightheaded and dizzy. An MRI of the brain was recommended. A small apparently benign lesion was found and a follow up MRI was done on October 10th. The known lesion had grown and was no longer showing benign characteristics. A second lesion was also found. The breast cancer has metastasized to the brain. On Thursday, October 19th, Lisa will undergo an outpatient Gamma Knife radiation procedure in Atlanta.

This new diagnosis has left us blind-sided. We thought we were done (at least for a while) and we were ready to begin the new normal of life after cancer treatments. Now, we find ourselves back in the fight. In addition to the Gamma Knife procedure, she will undergo a CT PET scan and an MRI of the liver. She will, also, be required to be monitored closely every 2-3 months with brain MRIs. Additional treatments may follow based upon the results of the Gamma Knife procedure.

Throughout the journey, the financial burden has continued to mount for us as Lisa has been unable to work during treatment. She was looking forward to ending treatment so that she could return to work and we could try to get our feet back under us. Returning to work has certainly been postponed while we sort out what the future holds. The financial pressures will continue to grow in the months to come as we enter a new calendar year with multiple MRIs and treatments.

The survival statistics are discouraging. This disease is relentless. Our faith in our all-powerful God is strong! We firmly believe that only God numbers her days. She has many reasons to continue to fight. <<First grandbaby is due in March!!>> We appreciate the support our friends and family have provided throughout the past year and a half. Your prayer and financial support has encouraged us along the way and we are forever grateful for both.
