I don't frequently post on social media but 2020 has been a year that has challenged all of our comfort zones and well, here we are...
I couldn't imagine 2020 could get any worse when two months ago my precious younger sister, Michelle, had a burst aneurysm on her brain and slipped into a coma. She is 35 years old. She was discovered in the early hours of the morning by her four year-old daughter, Isabella. Michelle was rushed to hospital and the doctors found a life threatening venous thrombosis as well as the burst aneurysm which had caused Michelle to have a brain hemorrhage stroke on the right side of her brain. This type of stroke is so severe and life threatening that the doctors told us to prepare for the worst. She lay in a coma for three weeks and this period of my life is a blur of intense anxiety and pain. Due to Covid, she was not allowed any visitors which as you can imagine was excruciating for my parents and her husband and child. After three weeks, and three operations to her brain later, the doctors decided it was time to wake her up from the coma. We didn't know what to expect, the spectrum of recovery is unique to every stroke survivor and so began another gruelling wait. Luckily, after a week she showed signs of recognizing her family and was able to speak which is a miracle in itself.
Michelle has since moved to a rehabilitation hospital and is being treated by a wonderful and tireless army of nurses and therapists who I will forever be indebted to. Michelle is making wonderful progress and we are incredibly proud of her strength. However, Michelle's left side of her body is paralysed and she is unable to make any new short term memories. We are fully confident in her recovery and we know that this will all improve and change over time. But it is clear that she will need years of intense physiotherapy and occupational therapy if she is to have a fighting chance at a decent recovery. She will also need a range of medical appliances and equipment such as a wheelchair, ramps etc and she will need a full time carer initially to help her adjust back into her home life. All of this is sadly very expensive and not covered by her medical aid.
We would like to raise money to be put towards these therapies and equipment to give Michelle the best chance at a full recovery. Any left over funds will be donated to the Stroke Survivors Foundation in South Africa.
Michelle loves her family more than anything and being a mom to Isabella has been a dream come true for her and we just want to give her the best opportunity to continue to do this. Everyday she shows us her unwavering strength and determination and we believe she will continue to smash every milestone and continue to be the miracle she has shown us she is. She inspires me everyday....

Ich konnte mir nicht vorstellen, dass 2020 noch schlimmer werden könnte, als vor zwei Monaten meiner geliebten jüngeren Schwester Michelle ein Aneurysma im Gehirn platzte und sie ins Koma fiel. Sie ist 35 Jahre alt. Sie wurde in den frühen Morgenstunden von ihrer vierjährigen Tochter Isabella entdeckt. Michelle wurde auf dem schnellsten Wege ins Krankenhaus gebracht, wo die Ärzte eine lebensbedrohliche Venenthrombose sowie das geplatzte Aneurysma feststellten, das bei Michelle zu einem Schlaganfall auf der rechten Seite ihres Gehirns geführt hatte. Diese Art Schlaganfall ist so schwer und lebensbedrohlich, dass die Ärzte sagten, wir sollten uns auf das Schlimmste vorbereiten. Sie lag drei Wochen lang im Koma, und dieser Abschnitt meines Lebens war geprägt von intensiver Angst und Traurigkeit. Wegen Covid durfte sie keinen Besuch empfangen, was, wie Ihr Euch vorstellen könnt, für meine Eltern und ihren Mann und ihr Kind entsetzlich war. Nach drei Wochen und drei Operationen an ihrem Gehirn entschieden die Ärzte, dass es an der Zeit war, sie aus dem Koma zu holen. Wir wussten nicht, was uns erwartete, der Verlauf der Genesung ist bei jedem Schlaganfallpatienten individuell, und so begann ein weiteres zermürbendes Warten. Glücklicherweise zeigte sie nach einer Woche Anzeichen, dass sie ihre Familie wiedererkannte und sprechen konnte, was an sich schon ein Wunder ist.
Michelle ist inzwischen in ein Rehabilitations-Krankenhaus verlegt worden und wird von vielen wunderbaren und unermüdlichen Krankenschwestern und Therapeuten behandelt, denen ich für immer zu Dank verpflichtet sein werde. Michelle macht wunderbare Fortschritte, und wir sind unglaublich stolz auf ihre Willenskraft und Stärke. Allerdings ist Michelles linke Körperhälfte gelähmt und ihr Kurzzeitgedächtnis ist nicht intakt. Wir haben volles Vertrauen in ihre Genesung, und wir wissen, dass sich dies alles mit der Zeit bessern wird. Aber es ist klar, dass sie Jahre intensiver Physio- und Ergotherapie benötigen wird, wenn sie eine Chance auf eine Genesung haben soll. Sie wird auch eine Reihe medizinischer Geräte und Hilfen wie einen Rollstuhl, Rampen usw. benötigen, und sie wird zunächst eine Vollzeitpflegekraft brauchen, die ihr hilft, ihr häusliches Leben zu bewältigen. All dies ist leider sehr teuer und durch ihre medizinische Versicherung nicht abgedeckt.
Wir würden gerne Geld für diese Therapien und Geräte sammeln, damit Michelle die besten Chancen auf eine vollständige Genesung hat. Alle verbleibenden Mittel werden an die Stroke Survivors Foundation (Stiftung Schlaganfall Überlebende) in Südafrika gespendet.
Michelle liebt ihre Familie mehr als alles andere, und mit der Geburt von Isabella ist ihr Traum, Mutter zu sein, wahr geworden. Wir wollen ihr einfach die beste Möglichkeit geben, diese Rolle auch weiterhin ausfüllen zu können. Jeden Tag zeigt sie uns ihre unerschütterliche Stärke und Entschlossenheit, und wir glauben, dass sie weiterhin jede Hürde überwinden wird. Sie inspiriert mich jeden Tag....
