Shiprock is a Dine' (Navajo) agricultural-based community located along the San Juan River. Our  sacred river has been greatly impacted by the toxic waste spill from the Gold King Mine.
Farmers (nearly 1000 farms) have been extremely impacted with families losing their crops and many in danger of losing their crops for lack of water.  Farming has been our livlihood for generations. Livestock owners  are similarly impacted, as their livestock are used to drinking from the river.
Various testing results say the river is safe, but we remain apprehensive as 3M gallons of dangerous  heavy metals has to go somewhere. We shut off the water we use for livestock and our crops for fear of contaminating our fields, we are adamant to leave clean farmlands for our grandchildren.
All water resources are being trucked in from out of the area for livestock and for the crops. The Shiprock Chapter government will continue to haul water to the animals and the crops.
We need financial support to continue hauling water to our thirsty animals and our thirsty crops. Our agriculture and livestock raising that are intrinsically interwined with our culture and our spirituality, as well as our family economics are at stake.
Ahee'hee (thank you).
