Fighting Multiple Myeloma with Paty!
Donation protected
One month ago my sister, Paty Young, was officially diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (a rare type of cancer). Last week, the Packers played horrible and lost. Tough times, all around, I know. Paty wasn’t with us for the weekly family “Packer Party.” She was in the hospital for her second extended stay this month. After the game, she texted a sour group of Packer fans “I don’t know what’s sucking worse right now…cancer or the packers.” It made everyone chuckle.
This is the kind of humor that makes my sister, Paty, so great. If you trip, she will make fun of you. But when she is around, there is ALWAYS something to laugh about. Aside from that beaming sense of humor, she is the strongest person I know. Paty is A full-time working single-mother of two beautiful 10-year old girls, she never skips a beat…until now.
She knew, we all knew, that something with her health had been off this past year. After an eight-day hospital stay, there was a sense of relief when we received her diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma. At least we FINALLY knew what we were up against. Later, we discovered that MM is an incurable type of cancer. In order to maintain a reasonable quality of life for a few years, Paty will undergo months of weekly chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant. Then in three years, she will do the chemo and transplant again… and then again in another three years. There is no remission in Multiple Myeloma. This will be a lifelong battle.
The past month has been a challenge to say the least. Her oncologist immediately started her on chemo meds with the hope to fight this disease with less invasive chemo injections. However, that plan has quickly gone out the door as Paty becomes weaker every day. MM is a painful type of blood cancer that deteriorates your bones, shuts down your kidneys, and all-around sucks. Within two weeks, the chemo plan had advanced to a chemo port and weekly 5-hour chemo infusions for the next six months, at least.
The common theme between Paty and I every day is “Don’t worry, we got this.” It is true. We do. We still make jokes. We still laugh as much as possible. You will never meet a tougher, more courageous, independent woman. Since the day I was born, Paty has taught me to be strong. She teaches her girls to be strong. Now that she starts this battle against a lifelong incurable cancer, Paty is going to show the world her own strength and perseverance.
This fight is going to prevent Paty from working for months. Even with health insurance, the cost of the treatment and prescription meds are beginning to add up. She has received an outpour of love, support, and prayers from friends and family. Many have asked what else they can do to help. If you are so inclined, I have setup this GoFundMe Me page for just that. Any donation will go directly to help with her medical expenses, which are rapidly accumulating. Thank you so much for your generosity and God bless.
