Aerial Lynch was born on October 15, 1993 at Windber Hospital. They found her umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck twice. Nine hours after birth she quit breathing and was transferred to Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown to the RICN (regional intensive care nursery) where she spent the first two weeks of her life. They told us she would not even live that long. While in Conemaugh she went code blue seven times. When she was stable she was sent home on an apnea monitor not knowing yet all of her medical problems.
At the age of three months she was sent to Childrens Hospital in Pittsburgh. After a week in Childrens Hospital she was diagnosed with Pan Hypopituitarism (a condition in which the pituitary gland does not produce any of its hormones), Diabetes Insipidus (a kidney-related condition that causes excessive thirst and urination), Septic Optic Dysplasia (the underdevelopment of the optic nerves causing blindness) and seizure disorder. She was put on numerous medications to replace the natural hormones that the body wasn't producing and an anti-seizure medication. Due to her medical conditions she is developmentally delayed and her speech is very limited. The first year of her life she spent every holiday in the hospital for one reason or another. She has spent many years in and out of the hospital and going to doctors for many reasons including seizures, which have never been fully under control.
At the age of three she started school in Altoona at the IU8 Curtain preschool program. When she was five years old she was put on a growth hormone because she was so little. Then at six years of age she began attending public school in the IU8 class for children with disabilities. Trying to give her more opportunity to function and be apart of her "normal" social society, at the age of eight she was enrolled at the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children in Pittsburgh, where for the next eight years she spent her week, coming home to her family only on the weekends. She then came back to Bedford County and attended Hyndman High Schools MDS class for two months to finish out the school year. The following year she began attending Bedford Area High Schools MDS class in which she is still enrolled. She was able to attend her Junior prom in 2011 and with the help of Principal Kyle Kane walked across the stage for her graduation from Bedford High School in 2012.
In 2013 Aerial was taken to the Bedford Hospital ER and was then transported to Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown with an acute Pancreatitis. She spent two weeks in the hospital trying to get the Pancreas under control on top of having an allergic reaction to medication and having seizures. After returning home her seizures became worse and more frequent.
On November 19, 2014 she was admitted to Bedford Hospital with another acute Pancreatitis and Kidney failure. She spent a week in ICU and was then sent home. On November 30th she was back in the ER with hypothermia, body temperature of 88, a heart rate of 40 and Adrenal Crisis. At this time she had to be transported by life flight to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. She spent 4 days until stabilized and sent home. On December 5th we were back at the ER with the same symptoms. This time they could not fly her due to bad weather. After six hours they said they could not find an ambulance to transport her so we signed her out and drove her ourselves back to Presbyterian Hospital. After four days she was diagnosed with a Hypothalamus (which regulates body temperature) dissorder leading to underfunctioning of the adrenal glands. After being able to get her body temperature back to normal they said they had never had an adult with a Hypothalamus issue.
After purchasing the equipment so we could check her temperature, heart rate and blood pressure multiple times a day at home we have had trouble keeping it normal. Although it has not dropped that low until now. On March 25th, we found ourselves back at the Bedford ER in critical condition again. She was flown to Presbyterian Hosptilal where she has been in ICU ever since. This time the are saying they have done everything clinically possible and cannot get her temperature above 95 degrees and they do not know what to do next other than send her home and try to manage and keep her comfortable. This is not acceptable and we would really like to send her elsewhere for another opinion. The options that we are looking at vary from John Hopkins in Baltimore to San Antonio TX where her aunt is a retired Air Force medical personnel and currently works at San Antonio Hospital. Both which are going to incur many expenses.
Financially we are asking for help. There are three other children at home who we need help providing for (food, daily living expenses, bills etc.). We have been sleeping in the waiting room (limited funds and cannot afford a hotel) food costs, transportation costs, unpaid medical expenses, medical equipment for home (a forced air heating blanket, hospital bed etc.), home adaptations (which will cost thousands of dollars) and any other unforseen expenses to care for Aerial in the near future.
Updates on Aerial will be posted on Facebook under Loretta Logue Lynch and Bob Lumpy Lynch.
