A home, not a doorway, for Dwight
For 2 years Dwight has called a concrete church doorway in Little Rock, AR his home. He works full time at a job he has had for 3 years. He takes the 6.30am bus to work 5 or 6 mornings a week. He is 57yrs old and still paying off his student loans.
In February this year, during extreme cold and icy weather, the Church that was providing emergency shelter in Little Rock closed its doors to the homeless. Dwight refused a ride to another shelter in North Little Rock because he was afraid he would miss his bus to work the next morning. He slept on the street in the snow to be sure he would get to work on time!
He has finally been granted approval for an efficiency studio apartment which he moved into with all his belongings in a few plastic bags. Dwight has no family left, but with the help of his new found friends he has a bed and bedding, a lamp, a nightstand,a rug, a TV and some kitchen essentials.
Finding his deposit and first month's rent has been a challenge for him but he is determined to never be homeless again. He has a desk which he says is where he will make his plans for his future and keep careful track of his finances.
We would like to give Dwight a little head start with his future to make the transition from the street to a home a smooth one.
During this fragile time often people are only one rent or utility payment away from once again being homeless. Please help us ensure his success as he works to make a fresh start.
