The day after her 50th birthday, Sarah went to see her doctor for fatigue, and breathing difficulty. She was immediately admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with Acute Myleoid Leukemia (FLT3). This is a very aggressive form of Leukemia that necessitated she spend the next 6 weeks at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC where she received 3 consecutive rounds of chemotherapy over 24 days. Sarah is home now getting strong enough for a bone marrow stem cell transplant. Luckily, one of her sisters is a good match for her and will be traveling from Massachusetts to NC for the procedure.
Sarah will be hospitalized for more chemotherapy prior to her transplant and will remain hospitalized for approximately four weeks. After her transplant, she will need to stay in an apartment close to the hospital so that she can attend appointments at the bone marrow clinic every day for the next two months.
As you can imagine, this situation has created an enormous amount of stress for Sarah and her family. Her employer has been very supportive however Sarah is unable to work while she is in treatment. Without a paycheck, and assuming the cost of her insurance, Sarah and her family are facing tremendous financial hardship. We hope that we can help Sarah and her family by relieving some of the financial burdens this hospitalization and treatment will put on them. Sarah is fighting for her life and needs to concentrate on getting well. She has a very long, difficult path ahead of her with many challenges and uncertainties.
Thank you for any support you can give Sarah and her family.
