School lunch debt is a major issue in this country, and our own Milford School district is no exception. As of January 17, 2020, the total lunch debt for our district was $7297.00. (Here are the amounts by school, however the number is subject to change daily).
High School: $3000
Middle School: $1000
Pattison: $690
Seipelt: $215
Boyd E Smith: $219
Mulberry: $1154
McCormick: $400
Milford Preschool: $19
Meadowview: $600
Total: $7,297.00
Lojjaden Farms is raising money to offset this debt. We want to wipe out lunch debt in the Milford School District, and we are asking the community of Milford to help! 100% of the funds received will be given to the district. (Lojjaden Farms will cover any processing fees charged by gofundme.com.) The children of Milford should not have to be hungry during their school day.
We are working directly with the the Nutrition Services staff at the board office. Gerry Levy and Kim Gregory are two leaders on this lovely team who truly care about Milford students but are limited by federal rules and restrictions in what they can do for students with lunch debt.
According to Kim and staff, students are permitted to amass up to $10 in lunch debt before they are then given an alternative lunch of either a peanut butter or cheese sandwich in lieu of an entrée. They get all regular sides of fruits, vegetables and milk – only the entrée is substituted. And parents are first sent a warning when the debt reaches $5.00 and are reminded every Friday until the debt is paid. This town ALWAYS steps up when we know there's a need. So let's get out our checkbooks and get this lunch debt paid down!
One last thing - unfortunately the school cannot accept more than the outstanding debt, so we’ll be working with Gerry, Kim and the nutrition team to keep an eye on the debt and put out future fund raisers if/when they are needed.
Thank you, City of Milford and friends, for your caring and your generosity!
Best,
Lorionna Metzger
