Hello, all you amazing people.
My name is Chad, and I'm writing this for my amazing wife, Rebecca. Rebecca is a loving, caring, and giving person who has literally given the coat off her back to someone in need.
She is going through hard times right now, battling cancer, and I need your help to make her feel loved, to help take some of the financial burden off, and to let her know she's not alone in this.
Our story.
Over a year ago, my wife and I found ourselves in the emergency room, embarking on an unexpected and challenging journey. She was treated for a detected abscess, leading to a week-long hospital stay that left us with over $17,000 in bills.
Fast forward to January 2024, and once again, we are back in the ER with similar pains. This time, a CT scan revealed two masses. A colonoscopy confirmed two tumors causing a partial blockage, with a strong possibility of them being cancerous. With no insurance or savings, we scrambled to gather the required $3,000 upfront cost for the surgeon by taking a loan out against our car.
We thought we were prepared for the surgery after paying the surgeon's fee, buying and using the $170 pills to clear her system before surgery, and fasting. We even reached out to the hospital multiple times to confirm if there were any additional costs or fees and received nothing back from them.
However, on the morning of the operation—just two hours before—the hospital informed us we owed $118,000 for the procedure. They required either a minimum of $5,000 down or a onetime charge of $27,000 to pay off estimated balance, and said if we couldn't pay that day, they may cancel the surgery. With no way to meet their demands, we finally managed to negotiate a $500 down payment with approval from the hospital CFO.
They then provided us with a good faith estimate of $118,000, as we were no longer eligible for the $27,000 payoff. This excludes the surgeon, anesthesiology and other tests, labs, miscellaneous charges, and is on top of the $17,000 we are still paying from the previous year's hospital visit.
Adding to these costs, my wife needs six months (12 sessions) of chemotherapy to ensure the cancer does not rear its ugly head again anytime soon.
Our Expenses So Far:
- $17,000+ for the first ER visit
- $118,000 "estimated" for surgery and recovery
- $3,000 upfront for the tumor-removal surgeon
- $4,000 to the surgeon for the remainder
- $2,000 to the anesthesiologist
- $1,500 upfront for a port installation
- $350+ every two weeks for six months
- $450 per month for insurance
- Ongoing labs, specialist visits, and CT scans
Every day feels like an uphill battle, and the weight of these burdens is crushing us. We are doing our best to stay strong, but it’s hard to see a way out without help.
How You Can Help
This is where we need your help. Throughout our lives, my wife and I have always been the ones our friends and family turn to in times of need. We have given our all to support those we love. Now, we find ourselves in a position we never imagined—needing help ourselves.
My wife, unable to work and burdened by the weight of these overwhelming expenses, feels helpless. Watching her struggle breaks my heart. Despite my efforts, I can't shoulder this burden alone. The financial and emotional strain is more than we can bear.
We have always believed in the strength of community and the power of coming together in times of crisis. Now, we are reaching out, hoping that the same compassion and support we have given can be extended to us. We can't do this alone.
We need help.
